Courses

Introduction to Computers & Lab

Introduction to Computers:
Students will be taught the terminology of computers.  They will learn about the components of a computer, including processors, memory, storage, display, input devices, and more.  Operating systems and application software specifications will be discussed.  Students will familiarize themselves with the usage of a keyboard and mouse/touchpad.  They will work with Microsoft Windows Vista or 7, NotePad, WordPad, and Paint programs.  File management and document searches will be covered.  A brief introduction to business and personal applications will be included as time permits.

Keyboard Lab:
Typing ability is a prerequisite for Business Applications and will follow each Introduction to Computers lesson.  Students will learn proper finger positioning for typing.  They will work at their own pace using a typing practice program.  Students achieving a minimum of 16 words per minute proficiency will receive a Certificate of Completion.  Students already having a typing proficiency of 16 words per minute or more may use this time to practice what they learned in the Introduction lesson.

Business Applications

Word Processing:
Students will learn to transcribe and edit documents in increasing complexity.  They will start with simple memos and letters and advance to documents requiring pagination, special formatting, tables and charts, columns, and graphics.  Students will learn many of the features common to Microsoft Word, Corel WordPerfect, Lotus WordPro, and other popular word processing programs.

Spreadsheet:
Students will learn to set up simple accounting ledgers requiring cell formatting, data entry, and formulas.  Many features common to Microsoft Excel, Lotus 123, and other spreadsheet programs will be discussed and practiced.

Database:
Students will learn to create an address or inventory database using concepts of fields, records, reports, and queries.  Students will also learn to create efficient forms for data entry.  Many of the concepts will apply to programs such as Microsoft Access and Lotus Approach.

Photo Editing & Presentation

Photo Editing:
Students will learn the features common to most digital cameras such as resolution, effects, optical/digital zoom, storage media, and file types.  The editing lessons cover the basics of brightness, contrast, hue, and saturation adjustments.  Practice will also include resizing, rotating, cropping, and filtering images.  Students will learn the features common to Adobe Photoshop and other photo editors.

Presentation:
Students will create video slide shows with the exciting features of Microsoft PowerPoint or a similar presentation program.  They will learn to add text with effects, add background music and sound effects, and experiment with many transition effects to enhance their productions.

Internet Proficiency

Basic Web Page Design:
Students will design Web-ready documents with links, graphics, and animations.  They will learn about font styles and enhancements.  Included will be discussion of HyperText Mark-up Languange (HTML) codes for tables and forms.

Advanced Web Page Design:
Students will learn to create Cascading StyleSheets (CSS) to make editing of multi-page Web sites easier.  They will also learn to create online forms and e-mail links.  Students will then be trained to upload their finished projects onto the World Wide Web (WWW) to show off to their friends and families.

Language Skills

Spanish Grammar:
In this class, you will learn proper pronunciation and grammatical rules for speaking and writing in the Spanish language.  This course is divided into Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced sessions.  Students will be given and assessment to determine which is right for them.
